We have a sign in our living room that says, “Remember, as far as everyone knows, we are a nice, normal family.” If you happen to know our family or getting to know us through the blogs, you will soon realize we are far from “normal.” We lean more to the crazy side than the normal! Honestly, I’m not sure what today’s definition of “normal” is. But, I’m pretty certain we don’t fall into that category.
Several years ago Craig Groeschel wrote a book and study titled, “Weird: Because Normal isn’t Working.” In a nutshell, it talks about how the world’s definition of “normal” does not mesh with God’s example of how He desires us to live our life. If we want to live for God, follow His lead, live a Christ-centered life we will be seen as “weird” to those around us. So if living a Christ-centered life is considered weird, then by all means, let’s be weird. This is just one of many examples that God has created us to stand out, not go with the flow and blend in. It’s ok to be different, to be weird, to not be normal.
What are you living for? What’s your motivation to achieve your goals, wants and desires? Are you looking at your neighbor and thinking I want what they have? If only I would get this promotion, life would be so much better. Have you seen those adorable shoes Susie is wearing? I want a pair like that! If only, if only, if only……. That sets us up for failure before we even begin.
Where is your heart? What do you treasure? Is what you’re living for lined up with what God most desires for you? He wants the very best for us. He wants us to be the very best for Him. He knows what we are capable of. He is standing ready to give us what we need as we open our heart, soul, mind and strength to him. Stop looking around and start looking up. Fill your heart and soul with Him. Is He your treasure? He treasures you! Do you treasure what He treasures? What does that look like for you? What does that change for you?
I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I am certain of who I want to be as I grow up. My goal in life is to live as much as Christ-like as possible. Will I attain that completely here on earth? Nah. And that’s ok. Deep down in my heart and soul, I want to live as Christ lived, love as Christ loves, reach out as Christ reaches out. I want to walk alongside and experience life through His eyes. Needless to say, I am a work in progress. I don’t have a handle on it. I have not mastered it. At times, I don’t understand it. What I do know is that He loves me. He is walking beside me. He wants the best for me. He is guiding every step I take. Am I willing to follow? Man, I hope so.
As a little girl I wanted to be and hang out with my dad. Most times that meant hanging out in the garage as he was fixing something. Or being his “gopher” when he needed something. And sometimes washing and sweeping out the church van after he changed the oil. If it meant spending time with him, then that’s what I wanted to do. The same thing applies to our Heavenly Father. I want to be like Him, be with Him, crawl up in His lap and sink into His embrace. I want to listen and soak in His direction and wisdom. To the world around us, that’s plain weird! I’m ok with that.
Here is a line from an older movie (don’t ask me the title, I can’t think of it, but I can replay the movie for you!) that one of the main characters says, “Why are you trying so hard to blend in when you were born to stand out.”
So my question for you is, “Why are you trying so hard to be normal when God created us to be weird?”
I’ll take my crazy. I’ll take my weird if it means that Christ is at the center of who I am and all that I do. Yes. Please and thank you.
My goal is life is to be as much like Christ as possible. As a mom, sister, friend and coworker my hope is that Christ rubs off of me and onto them. That they, too, will be ok with being weird. That they, too, will know His everlasting love. My family is not normal. And that’s ok. I wouldn’t have them any other way.
Thanks for sharing a moment with me. We are in this together in Him.
